Immediately after, some enthusiastic children came to register at the Mayor’s office, and in two weeks, classes started with as many as 25 children aging from four to 13.  Because more and more children and adults keep joining the club, one class was not enough, and the total members of 37 now practice in two groups.  Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 to 6 and from 6 to 7.

This project was initiated by Mr. Ramon Quinene, native of Merizo and one of the members of Guam Aikikai.  Mr. Quinene and his two children, 5 and 7, are regular members of Guam Aikikai.  He wanted to introduce Aikido to his native village which is far away from the central area of the island, and there are not so many activities for the villagers especially for children.  The Mayor took special interest in this non-violent and non-competitive martial art to help the entire community improve their life style to be healthier and more active one.

The Mayor’s office not only offers the space free of charge but also subsidizes a half of the monthly fees.  The mats to cover the floor are borrowed from Guam Aikikai but the practice area is still too small, and it is necessary to purchase some more mats.

Guam Aikikai is willing to extend their services to many other villages as after school activities for children and also for adults to be together with their children in the same interest.  More active participation from the parents and the community members is most appreciated.

 Aikido classes in Merizo

Thirty three children and four adults practice Aikido in Merizo.

On January 28, Merizo Mayor Chargualaf organized at the Merizo Community Center an Aikido demonstration by Guam Aikikai members.  Many children and parents from the village came to watch the demonstration of the techniques and listened to the explanation about the art.
