1988

Minegishi visited Kiribati for the first time, 20 days, for the preliminary research for the development of the Coastal Fishery on Christmas Island of Republic of Kiribati.

Visited Kiribati for the project to found a Fishery Department at the Marine Training Center in Tarawa.



1989

4/21    
Dispatched to Kiribati Marine Training Center, Fishery Department as the coordinator of the project.  The first assignment was for six months. Presented to the President of Kiribati, “A Ten Year Plan to spread Aikido in the PacificIslands”.

4/23         
Sent “News from Kiribati” No.1 to friends in Japan.  Continued to send up to 14th issue about the activities on Aikido in Kiribati.

        
Approved to use the classrooms of the South Pacific University Kiribati Branch for practice.

       
30 tatami mats arrived from Japan.
Minegishi got a dengue fever.

The first lecture and demonstration about Aikido.  More than 300 people came and the local police had to control the crowd.
Started the first class with 30 mats, 30 sets of uniforms and 40 students.

         
Mr. Yasuhide Kakita and his family of five were the first visitors from Japan.

“Kiribati Friendship Association” was established by Minegishi in order to obtain support from Japan.

Moved the practice to Bairiki Elementary School.

Requested through the Department of Internal Affairs of Kiribati to JICA of the Japanese Government for some sports equipments for the educational institutions.

Registered officially Kiribati Aikido Association as Kiribati Aikikai at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.  It was approved as a non-profit organization, and taxes and duties are to be waved.

Moved the practice to a warehouse of Telecom Company.  Started a search for a location for an Aikido dojo.

9/15    
Through the Ministry of Internal Affairs, sent a letter of request to Sasakawa Foundation, for support for the activities of Aikido.

9/18         
In the column ‘Shinjuu’ on the Japanese Newspaper”Nihon Keizai Shimbun”, Minegishi’s
activities in Kiribati was introduced.  From some readers, some funds were donated for establishment of the Aikido dojo.

9/30    
Ajinomoto Research Center donated 313 uniforms for fund raising.

“Kiribati Friendship Association” changed the name to “Kiribati Aikido Dojo Establishment Association”.

Measurment of the land started.  Put sticks around the land of 18mx13m.

Carried sand from the beach for the foundation of 18mx13mx70cm. All the members of Kiribati Aikikai laboured for this work.

Minegishi to Australia for the one week long health management holidays.


1991

A TV Company, ‘Television Asahi’ sent a crew of three to feature Minegishi’s activities in Kiribati.  This is a program named ‘SUMEBA CHIKYUU’to introduce Japanese who are actively working overseas. 

         
Minegishi sent a KGV High School student, Teata Terubea, and also a member of Kiribati Aikikai to Tokyo Tsushin Daigaku with the scholarship from Sasakawa Foundation. 50 more tatami mats arrived.  The dojo with the size for 80 mats completed.

TV Station Asahi televised nationwide ‘SUMEBA CHIKYUU’. Some funds were donated from the viewers.

Sony Company donated a large Video Projector with the intension to play videos for fund raising on Kiribati.  However, without amplifiers nor large screen, the plan did not go through.

The president of Kyooei Seikoo Company donated 100 brand new uniforms. From others, many things were donated for Kiribati.

The donated objects were sold at the newly built dojo for fund raising.

With the funds from Sasakawa Foundation, Mr. Seishiro Endo shihan with his two students were sent to Kiribati from the Aikikai Hombu Dojo. Magazine “Oceania No.28” posted a photo of Endo shihan with Kiribati students.


1992

2/8-26 
With the funds from Sasakawa Foundation, Mr. Masatoshi Yasuno shihan was sent to Kiribati from the Aikikai Hombu Dojo.  Ms. Rieko Hayakawa from the Sasakawa Foundation also accompanied him from 8-12 to observe the Aikido activities in Kiribati.

Minegishi completed the three year contract and returned to Japan.

9/3       
The Japanese newspaper, “Yomiuri Shinbun” ‘Kao (A Face)’ introduced Minegishi.

10/31    
Completed the reports on Kiribati for the Overseas Fisheries Cooperation Agencies which dispatched Minegishi to Kiribati for three and a half years.

11/17   
As a free volunteer, Minegishi returned to Kiribati to continue instructing Aikido and also to teach Japanese at the KGV High School.

2. Start receiving monthly donation of 50,000yen from January, 1994, from Mr. Akira Takahashi, Sony Life Insurance at Sendai Branch Director. Mr. Takahashi sponsored two high school students of Kiribati to attend the Sendai Higashi High School Culture Festival held on September 3-4. Mr. Isao Abe, All Japan PTA president and two Sendai Rotary Club members also offered their cooperation. 

3.Ms. Chieko Seki, All Japan Women’s Newspaper Editor, published series of articles about Kiribati written by Minegishi.
Minegishi sent 11 articles about “Fishes in Kiribati” on the same paper, they were published in the book, “Fishes in East-West-South-North”, 1997 All Japan Women’s Newspaper Company.
